SmartICE is a program that combines Inuit knowledge with the latest technology to allow northern communities to maintain their traditional lifestyles and cultural practices in spite of changing conditions on the ice. SmartICE's innovative research methodology based on community involves young people in the development manufacturing and deployment of ice-monitoring sensors on stationary platforms. The program offers instruction in both social and technical abilities to help youth become effective environmental monitors of their local ice conditions.
The project has received numerous awards including the Arctic Inspiration Prize for 2016. SmartICE opened the Northern Production Centre at Nain, Nunatsiavut in 2019. This facility trains Inuit to build and deliver stationary SmartICE sensors to communities across Inuit Nunangat and northern Canada.
